FIM Moto3™ World Championship – Grand Prix of Malaysia
Sepang International Circuit (Sepang, Malaysia) | Friday, November 1st, 2024
After a wet free practice session on Friday morning, Noah Dettwiler got a taste of what it means to race at the Sepang International Circuit a couple of hours later during Practice 1.
However, Noah Dettwiler quickly got to grips with the Sepang circuit, one of the longest and most selective on the current calendar, as his 17th place in the morning on a track that was still largely wet after morning showers showed.
Shortly after midday, when the first timed session took place, conditions changed dramatically. The 5.5-kilometer track, just a stone’s throw from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, had completely dried out and the sun was mercilessly heating up the asphalt. Although the 19-year-old KTM rider was unable to finish higher than 26th, he was still able to take positive stock of the first day. Dettwiler and the team deliberately used the day’s dry session to complete as many laps as possible in order to improve the feeling on the brakes and when turning into corners, with a number of points on their to-do list. In consideration of the working strategy, the focus was not on the lap time, so the gap of less than three seconds for a Sepang rookie is not too big due to the difficult track.

«First of all, I would like to say that Sepang is a very cool track – I really like it. In this morning’s wet free practice session, I was able to build up a good rhythm and got faster from lap to lap. It was a really satisfying start to the weekend. It was very hot in the afternoon, and I am happy with the work we did in the dry. We took a good path and worked solidly. The most important thing was that we fully implemented our work plan. We can be satisfied with that. Hopefully we can take another step tomorrow, because of course I don’t like our current position at all. We will therefore try to improve tomorrow in order to move up the timesheets.»
