Training report GP Indonesien, Mandalika International Circuit | A stroke of luck on Friday morning

FIM Moto3™ World Championship – Grand Prix of Indonesia
Mandalika International Circuit (Lombok, Indonesia) | Friday, September 27th, 2024

For Noah Dettwiler, the first overseas Grand Prix in the final stage of the championship began with a scary moment. Fortunately, the 19-year-old KTM rider escaped unhurt in an early morning crash.

For Noah Dettwiler, Southeast Asia’s tropical climate conditions are nothing new to him, as he already took part in the Grand Prix of Indonesia a year ago. However, the Moto3™ rookie had a painful experience in free practice in the morning when the track was not yet in good condition. Many crashes in the very first session of the weekend confirmed that there was only a narrow line with halfway decent grip.

Dettwiler started the weekend very motivated, found quickly a good feeling and was able to improve lap by lap until he was thrown wildly from his machine by a highsider on the fifth lap. The images of the crash and a pain-stricken rider being supported by paramedic’s stuff till behind the track suggested the worst. But shortly after his arrival in the team’s garage, the Swiss rider was in a good mood again and explained to his crew how the accident had happened.

By the start of the first qualifying session, the ambitious racer from the canton of Solothurn had blocked out everything and was fully focused on his task. Dettwiler only finished Friday in 27th place, but this was partly due to the lost practice time in the morning.

«We got off to a very good start this morning. The feeling was good straight away and the first five laps whetted my appetite for more. Unfortunately, I then had a crash that ended my session because it took a long time to get my bike back into the pit. But most importantly, I am doing well. In the second session in the afternoon, I quickly got the feeling back for the bike. It was a shame that I did not feel quite as comfortable with the new tyre in our second run. I think that the grip was less because of the higher asphalt temperatures. So, we will have to take a closer look at that now. Otherwise it was a positive day, because the feeling for the bike is okay and fortunately I am not in too much pain after the crash. »
