Training report GP Australien, Phillip Island | Noah Dettwiler: «Back okay so far, that’s the most important thing»

FIM Moto3™ World Championship – Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix
Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit (Cowes / VIC, Australia) | Friday, Oktober 18th, 2024

Less than two weeks after his serious crash in Japan, the 19-year-old Swiss rider surprised everyone with an eleventh place in the first qualifying session on Phillip Island.

The entire paddock has traveled to the other side of the world to South Australia for the 17th round of the current FIM Moto3™ World Championship season. Among them is Noah Dettwiler, who fortunately did not suffer any serious injuries in the race crash in Motegi. He is only still feeling the effects of the crash on his right wrist.

The weekend at picturesque Phillip Island, less than a two hours’ drive south of Melbourne, began with a completely wet Friday for Moto3™ class. It was raining during free practice in the morning, which is why Dettwiler did not risk too much. After getting the green light from the race doctors on Thursday, his main focus in this first session was to get an idea of his physical condition. The KTM rider finished the session in 22nd place.

After heavy rain in the late morning, which caused free practice session for the MotoGP™ class to be cancelled, the track was wet for Moto3™ Practice 1 shortly after lunch time. Dettwiler has often proven his talent in such conditions and did so again today, setting eleventh fastest lap time during the 35-minute session. He was able to skilfully avoid an impending highsider at the slippery tarmac. Eleventh place in the timesheets of the session means a direct entry for Q2 for the time being.

«My back is okay so far, that’s the most important thing. Only my wrist still hurts. Apart from that, it was a special day because I think it’s very cool to be riding here on this track for the first time. In the morning in the wet, I approached things a little more cautiously as I didn’t have the best feeling at the beginning. But we were able to improve that significantly in the second session. So I think we had a very positive day today and will continue like this tomorrow. »
