Race report GP Malaysia, Sepang | Dettwiler reflects on Malaysia race: «Important progress despite difficulties»

FIM Moto3™ World Championship – Grand Prix of Malaysia
Sepang International Circuit (Sepang, Malaysia) | Sunday, November 3rd, 2024

Noah Dettwiler’s long overseas tour ended with a disappointing race Sunday in Malaysia, although he was well on his way to ending the weekend in Southeast Asia on a positive note.

The challenging conditions at the Sepang International Circuit did not mean well for Noah Dettwiler, who is contesting his first full season in FIM Moto3™ World Championship this year. Although the 19-year-old Swiss rider was able to adapt well to the heat in the race – the temperatures on Sunday felt like the hottest of the weekend – he lost the direct connection to the field in the early stages already. Two riders had crashed in front of him, which meant Dettwiler had to take a detour.

Dettwiler then quickly found his rhythm and caught up with the riders in front of him. He was determined to reduce the gap. However, he did not remain error-free and had to accept a harmless fall on lap ten. However, he was able to continue his race and saw the chequered flag in 18th place after 15 strenuous laps.

Now the entire MotoGP™ paddock is traveling back to Europe, where the season finale is expected to take place in Barcelona in a fortnight’s time instead of Valencia, which was hit by severe weather damage.

«Unfortunately, the race started very unfavourably because two riders crashed in turn two and I had to run wide. As a result, I lost a lot of time on the first lap. Nevertheless, I was able to make up some ground and catch up a little with the riders in front of me without slipstreaming, because I had a good feeling despite the hot conditions. Unfortunately, one or two mistakes crept in, which ultimately led to a crash. I was once a bit too late on the brakes in turn nine and hit a bump in corner entry, which caused the front wheel folded. It’s a shame because I had a good feeling until then and I think we’ve taken an important step in the right direction here after Thailand. For sure we are still too far away, but we will take the positives and look forward. Let’s see what the last race of the season will bring. We will prepare for it as well as possible so that we can go into the winter break with a good feeling. »
