Qualifying report GP Japan, Mobility Resort Motegi | Strong again in the wet, good improvement in the dry

FIM Moto3™ World Championship – Grand Prix of Japan
Mobility Resort Motegi (Motegi, Japan) | Saturday, Oktober 5th, 2024

The rain came too late for Noah Dettwiler on Saturday afternoon, after the 19-year-old made a splash in Practice 2 in mixed conditions with ninth-fastest lap time.

At the 16th stop of the current FIM Moto3™ World Championship this weekend in Japan, some nerves will be put to the test. On the morning of the second day of practice, the track was completely wet when teams arrived in the paddock at the Mobility Resort Motegi, formerly known as Twin Ring Motegi. Despite a very cloudy sky, there was no rain in the morning apart from a few scattered drops.

All teams and riders started Practice 2 on rain tyres. So did Noah Dettwiler and his France based CIP Green Power Team. The KTM rider quickly found his feet on the wet track, even as it dried out more and more. Dettwiler impressed with a consistent rhythm and found himself in ninth place on the timesheet after 35 minutes practice time.

Up until the start of qualifying, which decides the starting grid, the eyes of the talented youngster from the canton of Solothurn were often directed towards the sky. However, his hopes for the onset of rain were not fulfilled. In qualifying, Dettwiler had to adjust to dry conditions again, which he did well, as a one-second improvement in terms of lap time compared to Friday afternoon underlines. Nevertheless, he was unable to finish higher than tenth. Dettwiler will therefore tackle the 16th race of the season from row eight, but is confident, as he was able to improve a lot, especially at the track’s heavy braking points, which he had criticized yesterday.

Swiss television SRF will broadcast the Moto3™ race early Sunday morning live as a stream on «srf.ch» (03:50-04:50). Alternatively, there is the «ServusTV On» app and the paid livestream on the official MotoGP™ website.

«This morning in the wet we were able to get into a good rhythm. I was also able to improve lap after lap, I felt very comfortable in these conditions. As the track dried out more, I found a good feeling for it. In the afternoon we made a step forward compared to yesterday and found a second. But of course, that is still not good enough. I still do not feel completely comfortable with the set-up and the bike in dry conditions as it is at the moment.»
